This antique Egyptian bronze Ibis statue of the God Thoth was made in Egypt during the Grand Tour/Egyptian Revival periods (c. 1780s-1920s) and is in excellent condition. The head, neck and legs are made of cast bronze with a verdigris patina, the eyes are a deep-red resin, and the body is hand-carved & painted wood the color of lapis lazuli.

The ibis is a long-legged wading bird that lives along the shores of the Nile, was associated with the Ancient Egyptian God Thoth: the god of writing, magic, wisdom, and the moon. During festivals and processions, priests would carry statuettes such as this from the temple of Thoth in Hermopolis Magna to the nearby necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel, where they were housed in underground passages.

This Ibis statue was purchased in the early 1980's and was said to have been crafted during the Grand Tour/Egyptian revival period. All research indicates this identification is accurate, and is being sold as such.
