John Grinsell and Sons Silver Plate Heavily decorated Wine Jug (one time amazing price!)
This superb Victorian era piece is decorated with 3 major panels each separately decorated with a scene and labelled with Patientia | Solertia | Nolvi. Loosely translated from Latin - Patientia means Patience, Solertia means Skill and Nolvi means No [in this case unwilling] - when viewed in combination with the soldier that forms the finial - it means defiance or not giving up, an unwillingness to accept defeat. So it is likely a family crest meaning something similar to Patience Skill and Unwilling to accept Defeat/Unwavering

Marked to base JG & Sons 1455 [this would be a design or shape number]
Approx 28cms (11") tall
Approx 16.5cms (6 1/2") spout to handle
In excellent condition with slight copper tones showing through on the very high points
I "think" that at some point in the items long history the Soldiers staff has been bent at the tip
