Vintage Panama Kuna Mola Folk Art San Blas Island Reverse Appliqué Framed Birds 21"x17.5"

History:
The Mola originated with the tradition of the Indigenous Kuna (also spelled Guna or Cuna) women painting their bodies with geometric designs, using available natural colors. At a certain point, after the arrival of the Spanish, these same designs were woven in cotton, and later still, sewn using cloth "acquired by trade from the ships that came to barter for coconuts during the 19th century".

Condition: Pre-Owned Good

Condition: Very good condition, as with Molas it is expected to get some fray threads. The frame has a handful of small nicks, but not that noticeable. Please see all pictures as they are part of the description.

Features:
• Molas are often inspired by flowers, birds and marine and terrestrial animals.
• Designed in geometrical shapes and forms and sewn with a complex layering of panels in a reverse appliqué.
• Vintage from 1980's or prior.
• Beautiful colorful work
